Salmon, Trout & Much More – Katmai Lodge
Kamtmai, Alaska
Katmai, Alaska
Katmai Fishing Lodge is for serious anglers, offering guests an unparalleled mix of salmon species, incredible trout fishing and more. For years, anglers have rated Katmai Fishing Lodge one of the world’s top fishing destinations. The fishing lodge’s unique location, the staff’s attention to detail and the unbelievable fishing opportunities make Katmai a world-renowned fishing hot spot. While other Alaskan fishing outfits offer the opportunity to catch large fish for one or two species, Katmai Fishing Lodge unquestionably provides the most diversified freshwater fishing experience in Alaska.
The Fishing
Season - May to October
The crystal clear waters of the Alagnak River originate from the Nonvianuk Lake. Unlike other glacier rivers, the Alagnak does not run silt laden. The Alagnak River is in the middle of Alaska's only Designated Trophy Fishing Area and is famous for being a very wild and scenic river. Because of Katmaii Fishing Lodge’s unique location, there is no need to fly in and out daily as with some other Alaskan fishing lodges. The salmon are fresh from the salt water and pass in front of our fishing lodge hourly, meaning anglers get more quality fishing time on the river. The Alagnak River features one of the largest Sockeye Salmon runs in Bristol Bay, numbering in the millions. King Salmon in the river run up to the 70-pound class. The average fisherman can catch 25 to 40 Sockeye a day. On a fly, a Sockeye's fight is, by most standards, as good as a Steelhead.
Depending on your fishing interests, as many as nine different species of fish can be taken. All of the salmon and trout are 100% wild – no stocking takes place in this wilderness area. In the spirit of wilderness and fishing conservation, Katmai Fishing Lodge uses only de-barbed hooks and maintains a strict catch and release policy on the native Rainbow Trout and Arctic Grayling. Fishermen can keep up to five salmon each (packaging and freezing for shipment home is provided). IFGA weighing and recording is done at the fishing lodge. Our fishing guides assist with the preparation of your trophy fish for mounting.
Seasonal catches include Arctic Char, Northern Pike, Arctic Grayling, huge Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and all five species of salmon. Katmai's Silver Salmon average 8-12 pounds, with trophy fish up to 20 pounds. They are the most acrobatic of the Pacific Salmon. August and September are Silver Salmon months when catches can average up to 40 fish per day. Chum Salmon average 9-12 pounds at Katmai Fishing Lodge with trophy fish well over 20 pounds. Fresh from the sea, Chums are "bright" and powerful. Guests may literally catch a fish on every other cast. Sight casts are made directly to the fish in shallow water, as they move up the river. Rainbow Trout average 2-8 pounds, with a good number of fish over 10 pounds. 30 Rainbows per day per rod is not unusual. Trophy Rainbow Trout of 12-20 pounds and 20-pound-plus Northern Pike are possible as well.
To round out your Katmai fishing trip, we can arrange exciting floatplane fishing trips that take you to remote tributaries for salmon, large Rainbow Trout, Arctic Grayling and Arctic Char.
